Woodsy Goes To College

Although Woodsy lives on the Southern Illinois University, Carbondale campus and always will, he felt it was time to explore a few new colleges. Woodsy found out the Maria was going to visit South East Missouri college on Friday and Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois on Saturday, so he tagged along. Woodsy and Maria were invited to check out the River Campus at SEMO and watch the Fall 2010 dance concert. Woodsy thought SEMO River Campus was very pretty, but he didn't think dance was for him. So, Woodsy decided that he would continue on with Maria to visit her sister, Christi, at Blackburn College. Woodsy found out that Christi is a biology major studying veterinarian medicine. He decided to ask Christi if she would give him his annual dog check-up. Christi gave him his check-up and said Woodsy was in good condition and very healthy. Woodsy really liked Blackburn College and Maria's sister as a vet, but he didn't like the cold weather. Woodsy said that Carbondale was his home and he couldn't wait to get back. Woodsy and Maria traveled 404.2 miles on their round trip bringing Woodsy's total miles traveled to 2961.06 miles.

Over Thanksgiving break, Woodsy was allowed to visit Alisha Krause at her home town of Brighton IL. During this time, Woodsy and Alisha toured both Alton and Grafton IL, a total of 128.39 from Woodsy's home in Wham. While driving along the river road, Woodsy spotted a gigantic bird painted upon a cliff. This strange site made Woodsy want to take a closer look. Upon inspection, Woodsy was able to read the legend of the Piasa Bird and realize it's historical importance.

After reading the legend of the bird, Woodsy found out that not only were the Native Americans of the time scared of the bird and his eating habits, but that the first sighting of the large painting was recorded by Father Jacques Marquette while traveling with Louis Joliet. Now the painting and legend continues to be passed down from generation to generation. In fact, the famous Piasa Bird is the school mascot for Alisha's school in Piasa, IL. After their exciting adventure, Woodsy headed back home, another 128.39 miles, and has now traveled a total of 2519.88 miles!

Joan

Hi! My name is Joan Hansston. I heard about Pyramid State Park, and realized I pass right by it on the way home from school. So I decided to take Woodsy with me for a quick look at the place. What a coincidence that SIU previously used the original 924 acres of reclaimed surface-mine land for research. In 1968 Illinois turned it into a recreation area. Since then they've expanded the area to 19,000 acres, making it the LARGEST state park in Illinois...All this virtually in my own back yard! You’ll never guess who we ran into while we were there…

Pyramid State Park 89°24’52” W, 38°01’05”N

Woodsy and I traveled 101.2 miles together. That makes a total of 315.3 miles Woodsy has traveled so far.
